The Rare Breed Youth Outreach Center (RBYOC) serves youth ages 13 through 20 and fills a gap in local services by focusing on 17 year old youth that are estranged from their families, too young to access services on their own, yet too old to be served by the state children services safety net. The average age of participants at first visit is 17.3 years with 55% being male and 45% female.
The RBYOC helps youth leave the streets and serves to reduce sexual abuse, exploitation and dangerous behaviors. The center focuses on individual personal development through the use of staff role modeling and mentoring, empowerment, and the provision of positive youth development opportunities resulting in increased self-esteem, self-worth and safety for youth participants.
The RBYOC is a "specialized youth center" that has television, stereo, computer lab, games, arts and crafts, billiards, foosball, youth message board, and professional staff. In addition to providing a safe place for youth to spend time off the street, the RBYOC helps youth by providing access to emergency shelter and transitional living programs, survival aid, individual assessments, goal planning, treatment and counseling, prevention and education activities, information and service referrals, case management, advocacy, crisis intervention and follow up support.
The center also has a toddler area for children of young parents and provides youth with positive youth development community service opportunities, transportation assistance, and birth certificate and identification procurement.
