The Rare Breed planning effort began in March, 1999 by a committee made up of local agencies and volunteers to develop services in response to homeless and disconnected youth identified in downtown Springfield.
The committee involved youth to be served in the 15 month planning process resulting in the opening of the Rare Breed Youth Outreach Center in June, 2000. Since that time, over 4,000 different youth have visited the center over 75,000 times. In October, 2002 the Rare Breed opened a Transitional Living Program (TLP) for homeless youth, including pregnant and parenting youth.
The Kitchen, Inc. agreed to sponsor the program during its first year. Since that time the Rare Breed services have been retained as full fledged programs of The Kitchen, Inc., Southwest Missouri's largest provider of shelter and services to homeless women and families.
